My Father did not grow up in a religious home, however Passover and the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were celebrated. When he came to Eretz Yisrael he became more religious – as a matter of fact he was shomer shabbos for the last 21 years of his life. After he found out he had bladder cancer about 1.5 years ago and would have to go through an exploratory surgery to determine how severe the cancer had spread he went to the hospital to meet with the surgeon to prepare for the surgery. The surgeon who Soviet style secular let my Father know that although the surgery would be on Sunday he would have to come to the hospital on Saturday (Shabbat) to prep for the surgery. The family tried to arrange to find a place nearby the hospital to stay on Friday so he could walk to the hospital on Shabbat but my Father was weak and could not find a place close enough. Therefore, when my Father met with the surgeon for the final meeting before the surgery my Father told him he can’t come on Shabbat. The surgeon argued with my Father that the situation was pikuach nefesh (life risk) and there were no other options. However, my Father stood on principle and told the surgeon that the fourth of the Ten Commandments states that we as Jews must keep the Shabbat and not violate this covenant between man and Hashem. The surgeon was stubborn and unmoved and would not relent and told my Dad how ill he was with the cancer and that his life was currently at grave risk…

My Father who was never one to be stubborn on matters of religious refused to budge even going so far as to asking the surgeon if he indeed took the Hippocratic Oath (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocratic_Oath) which states that a doctor may do not harm to the patient and that by trying to force my Father to break Shabbat unnecessarily he was doing just that. The surgeon was silent! Within a day or two the hospital relented and called and gave my Father permission to come to the hospital on Friday before Shabbat and stay there during Shabbat in preparation for his Sunday surgery.
If my Father can do it – anyone can!
“Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto the Lord your G‑d. On it you shall not do any manner of work — you, your son, your daughter, your man-servant, your maid-servant, your cattle, and your stranger that is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath Day, and hallowed it.”

הסיפור הזה שותף בהלויה (הלוויה):
אבי לא גדל בבית דתי, אולם חג הפסח והימים הנוראים של ראש השנה ויום כיפור נחגגו. כשהגיע לארץ ישראל הוא חזר בתשובה – למעשה, הוא היה שומר שבת במשך 21 השנים האחרונות לחייו. לאחר שגילה שיש לו סרטן שלפוחית השתן לפני כשנה וחצי, ויהיה עליו לעבור ניתוח גישוש כדי לקבוע את חומרת התפשטות הסרטן, הוא הלך לבית החולים כדי להיפגש עם המנתח כדי להתכונן לניתוח. המנתח, שהיה חילוני בסגנון סובייטי, הודיע לאבי שלמרות שהניתוח יתקיים ביום ראשון, הוא יצטרך להגיע לבית החולים בשבת כדי להתכונן לניתוח. המשפחה ניסתה לארגן מקום קרוב לבית החולים לשהות בו ביום שישי כדי שיוכל ללכת לבית החולים ברגל בשבת, אך אבי היה חלש ולא הצליח למצוא מקום קרוב מספיק. לכן, כאשר אבי נפגש עם המנתח לפגישה האחרונה לפני הניתוח, אבי אמר לו שהוא לא יכול לבוא בשבת. המנתח התווכח עם אבי שהמצב הוא פיקוח נפש ואין אפשרויות אחרות. עם זאת, אבי עמד על עקרון ואמר למנתח שהדיבר הרביעי בעשרת הדיברות קובע שעלינו כיהודים לשמור שבת ולא להפר את הברית הזו בין אדם להשם. המנתח היה עקשן ואדיש ולא התרצה ואמר לאבי כמה הוא חולה בסרטן וכי חייו נמצאים כעת בסכנה חמורה…

אבי, שמעולם לא היה עקשן בענייני דת, סירב לזוז אפילו עד כדי כך ששאל את המנתח אם אכן נשבע את שבועת היפוקרטס (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocratic_Oath) הקובעת שרופא אינו רשאי לפגוע בחולה וכי בכך שניסה לאלץ את אבי לחלל שבת שלא לצורך, הוא עשה בדיוק את זה. המנתח שתק! תוך יום או יומיים בית החולים התרצה, התקשר ונתן לאבי רשות להגיע לבית החולים ביום שישי לפני שבת ולהישאר שם במהלך השבת כהכנה לניתוח של יום ראשון.
אם אבי יכול לעשות זאת – כל אחד יכול!
“זכר את יום השבת לקדשו. ששת ימים תעבוד ועשית את כל מלאכתך, ויום השביעי שבת לה’ אלהיך. לא תעשה בו כל מלאכה. אתה ובנך ובתך, עבדך ושפחתך, בהמתך וגרך אשר בשעריך. כי ששת ימים עשה ה’ את השמים ואת הארץ, את הים ואת כל אשר בהם, ונח ביום השביעי. על כן ברך ה’ את יום השבת וקדש אותו.”
