In Memory לעילוי נשמת of my Father דניאל בן ניסן who was niftar כ״ח בְּנִיסָן תשפ״ו (April 15, 2026) – תרגום לעברית (גוגל) למטה

I will be posting short stories about my Father periodically with the continuing on Torah-Share.com along with a video dvar Torah. May the Torah shared here be for the elevation לעילוי נשמת of my Father’s soul דניאל בן ניסן

This story was shared at the הַלוָיָה (funeral):

My Father did not grow up in a religious home, however Passover and the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were celebrated. When he came to Eretz Yisrael he became more religious – as a matter of fact he was shomer shabbos for the last 21 years of his life. After he found out he had bladder cancer about 1.5 years ago and would have to go through an exploratory surgery to determine how severe the cancer had spread he went to the hospital to meet with the surgeon to prepare for the surgery. The surgeon who Soviet style secular let my Father know that although the surgery would be on Sunday he would have to come to the hospital on Saturday (Shabbat) to prep for the surgery. The family tried to arrange to find a place nearby the hospital to stay on Friday so he could walk to the hospital on Shabbat but my Father was weak and could not find a place close enough. Therefore, when my Father met with the surgeon for the final meeting before the surgery my Father told him he can’t come on Shabbat. The surgeon argued with my Father that the situation was pikuach nefesh (life risk) and there were no other options. However, my Father stood on principle and told the surgeon that the fourth of the Ten Commandments states that we as Jews must keep the Shabbat and not violate this covenant between man and Hashem. The surgeon was stubborn and unmoved and would not relent and told my Dad how ill he was with the cancer and that his life was currently at grave risk…

Find out what happened by going here on Torah-Share.com (along with a video dvar Torah):

My Father who was never one to be stubborn on matters of religious refused to budge even going so far as to asking the surgeon if he indeed took the Hippocratic Oath (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocratic_Oath) which states that a doctor may do not harm to the patient and that by trying to force my Father to break Shabbat unnecessarily he was doing just that. The surgeon was silent! Within a day or two the hospital relented and called and gave my Father permission to come to the hospital on Friday before Shabbat and stay there during Shabbat in preparation for his Sunday surgery.

If my Father can do it – anyone can!

“Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto the Lord your G‑d. On it you shall not do any manner of work — you, your son, your daughter, your man-servant, your maid-servant, your cattle, and your stranger that is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath Day, and hallowed it.”

Connecting to the Shabbat Prayers – Rabbi Dovid Orlofsky

Rabbi Dovid Orlofsky – Shares about the difference between the “sameness” of the everyday prayers and even the Jewish Holiday prayers and the uniqueness of the Shabbat prayers. How we travel from the historical Shabbat of the entire Jewish people during the evening prayer to the very present Shabbat of the morning prayer to the Shabbat of the future (redemption) in the afternoon prayer. The Importance Of The Sabbath by Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi

Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi – Shares a strongly worded mussar (ethics) on the importance of Jews to observe and keep Shabbat and the consequences that are codified in the Torah for not doing so. Shabbat is a gift from Hashem to the Jewish people – gratitude for this gift instead of indifference is our (correct) spiritual choice. This is the English version – the Hebrew version has already amassed 450,000 views.

How do we bring bracha into our life? by Rabbi Moshe Pinto

Rabbi Moshe Pinto – Shares with us the importance of tzniut (modesty or hiddeness) and it being the basis for bracha (blessing) in our lives individually and collectively as Jews. It is evident in many areas in our history including our tremendous population growth in Egypt from 70 soul to millions and the story of Bilam trying to curse but only being able to bless. Both are examples of the power of tzniut. Today we can experience this bracha most strongly on Shabbat. Listen to video to see how.
