39 יום לאחר המעמד רווי ההוד של מתן תורה ממתינים בני-ישראל לשובו של משה רבינו וכשהוא מתמהמה לשוב הם יוצרים עגל זהב אליו הם משתחווים.
סיפור חטא העגל מופיע באמצע הפרשה, אך עוד קודם לכן, בתחילת הפרשה, מופיע ציווי האלוקים למשה לאסוף מכל יהודי מגיל עשרים ומעלה מחצית שקל. מחצית זו תשמש ליציקת אדני המשכן, ותכפר על בני-ישראל.

Rabbi David Kaplan – Shares about the ceremony called a Pidyon Haben which directly comes from the Torah (Mitzvah D’Oraita). If you are a first born son you may be required to have this relatively simple ceremony performed by a Kohen (a member of the priestly tribe decending from Aaron Hakohen). There are some disqualifying attributes that nulify the need for this ceremony which Rabbi Kaplan explains in the video. The person in the video who is the main participant in the ceremony is newly religious (Bal Teshuva – returning to Hashem) and realized he did not have this done when he was a baby and has taken it upon himself to right this error.

לאהרן, שישמש ככהן הגדול, הכינו שמונה בגדים ואילו לבניו ארבעה בגדים בלבד.
עבור אהרן הכהן שישמש ככהן הגדול יכינו האומנים את הבגדים המיוחדים הבאים:
אפוד: בגד עשוי כמין סינר מן החזה ועד לעקביים, על כתפי האפוד יהיו קבועות שתי אבנים ועליהם שמות בני ישראל;
החושן הוא בד ארוג ובו קבועות שתים עשרה אבנים יקרות, על כל אבן חקוק שם של שבט משבטי ישראל;
מתחת לאפוד, ילבש הכהן את המעיל אשר בשוליו ייקבעו פעמונים ורימונים שישמיעו קול תוך כדי הליכה ותנועה;
על מצחו הוא יענוד את הציץ, רצועת זהב עליה נחקק “קודש לה'” (לחצו כאן לכתבה נרחבת על הציץ).
ואת הבגדים הבאים יכינו האומנים גם עבור בניו של אהרון:
כותנת – חלוק אותה ילבשו על בשרם;
מגבעת – רצועת בד שלופפה על ראשם של הכוהנים (הכהן הגדול חבש אותה על ראשו בצורה שונה מעט);
אבנט – חגורה ארוגה מרכיבים שונים אותה היו הכוהנים חוגרים סביב לגופם,
ומכנסיים שאורכם נמשך עד לברכיים.
