Parashas Mikeitz Rosh Chodesh Tevet 5782

“Sweet Up and Down” By Rabbi David Yisrael Kalmus (copied here with permission)

There is a rhythm to life. We breath in and then out. We step with
our right foot, and then with our left. We sleep and then we awake.
We see for a moment, but then we blink.
Our Sages stated thousands of years ago that the world is not a
stagnant, fixed reality as it appears but that HaShem literally
recreates the physical universe at every single moment. Recently,
quantum physics has corroborated this ancient teaching, revealing
that the entire world is popping into and out of existence at each
instant, like the blink of an eye!
Our Sages also teach that man is called an “Olam Katan”, a small
world. Therefore, in some very profound way, we are also bursting
into and out of existence.
Until the wellsprings of the Ba’al Shem Tov began to spread forth,
our understanding of this reality remained obscure. However, the
Ba’al Shem Tov and the great Chassidic Masters dug down deep
and pulled out the most potent parallel between the pulsating nature
of man’s consciousness and the pulsating rhythm of the world.
Chassidus explains that man’s mind is in a constant state of
fluctuation between expansion and constriction. The source for the
ups and downs of life comes from an inner psycho-spiritual
dynamic known as “Ratzo v’Shov”, running and returning. In the
famous sixth lesson of Likutey Moharan, Rebbe Nachman utilizes
his powerful understanding of “Ratzo v’Shov”, to shed light on the
bipolar state of man and the key to attaining harmony with the
natural ebbs and flows of our mind.
At times Rebbe Nachman explains that we will be feeling
particularly good. We will have tranquility of mind. Our emotional
state will be joyful. Our actions constructive.

This is coming from an expanded state of consciousness known
as Mochin D’Gadlut. Then in one instant, our thoughts become
dark, our emotions turbulent, and our actions destructive. This is
coming from a constricted state of consciousness known Mochin
d’Katnut.
In the modern world, we seek psychotherapy for this pattern.
However, Rebbe Nachman explains that the problem is not in
the pattern itself, but how we respond to it. Put simply, in times
of expanded consciousness, our orientation to life should be
growth oriented and explorative, with an intense desire to
achieve a greater truth than the one we currently possess. The
focus being on climbing from rung to rung.
On the other hand, when constricted consciousness strikes, we
should not continue our quest for understanding and truth
seeking. Instead, we should empty our minds completely of
what we hold to be true, and simply believe that what is taking
place is for the very best. The focus being on not getting pushed
off the rung completely.
One might scoff at such a response as being ignorant and naïve.
However, the depths of this teaching runs very deep.
How does one actually achieve greater understanding? Rebbe
Nachman is telling us that when trouble strikes, your ability to
“know” is purposefully concealed from you by HaShem. At this
point your choice is either to resist, as we so often do, or to
believe more deeply. Once one’s belief and hope deepens, his or
her capacity to experience a higher truth paradoxically expands
along with it. When approached correctly, the constriction of
“knowing” paves the way for greater understanding

In this week’s Parashah, Yosef ends his twenty two year long
period of intense servitude and begins to become the most
influential and fruitful figure in the world. While this transition
might appear to be highly incongruent, it is actually Yosef’s
positive response to negative circumstances that created the
possibility for this sweeping transformation.
Our Sages teach us that while in prison, Yosef was a “jumping
man”. Yosef had accustomed himself to respond to his problems
with dancing and singing. He did not attempt to understand the
“unfortunate” circumstances of his life. Instead, he decided to
face them with the utmost faith and joy. As a result, he was able
to see the good in his life, and achieve greater clarity than those
around him. It was with this intense clarity, that he left prison
and became viceroy of the most powerful country in the world.
Rebbe Nachman teaches that only a person who becomes expert
in going up and down, can truly find his way back to HaShem,
and bring everyone along with him.
Yosef’s ability to go up and down successfully ultimately led to
his own personal redemption as well as that of everyone around
him.
May HaShem bless us to know how to run and return like Yosef
HaTzaddik, facing our challenges with strength, simplicity, and
joy, and responding to our successes with an ever growing
yearning for greater understanding and clarity. With this, we will
find our way back to the One who loves us so dearly and waits
longingly for our true arrival.

Triple Topic Thursday – Rabbi Breitowitz, Rabbi Kalmus, and Rebbeztin Silber

Seeing the Light Within the Darkness

Rabbi Yitzchak Breitowitz – Great video going into detail about the three daily prayers and the source evidence of why we do it and where the sources for them. This is combined with the weekly Torah portion (Veyazei) that the Rav weaves into those sources.

Personal Thoughts – I learned a lot of new ideas that I can use in my daily prayers and the prayers in between. The more I learn the richer the experience which is why there is such a big stress to learn Torah because learning leads to new insights and new actions (mitzvot) which is what the whole World rests on.

Greatness Beyond Measure

Rabbi David Yisrael Kalmus – Shares with us how an attitude of gratitude for all the blessings in our life and how little we know can free us from all types of despair. The Rav’s example mashal of a seeing a bug on a leaf and how small it is in the vast universe that seems so big being analagous to us being that bug not knowing the vastness of Hashem and what He has in store for us and that its for our greatest good.

Double Feature Monday

You’re Doing Something Big. Keep Fighting! by Rabbi David Yisrael Kalmus

Rabbi Kalmus shares with us how all despair comes from belief in nature versus belief in Hashem gives them life force. Anxiety and Fear versus Faith and Comfort. Hashem created nature and can change it if He chooses. Also, that all sadness comes from (excess of the mind) – like eating the peel instead of the fruit. Everyday in our prayers Jews say that Hashem re-creates the World everyday. Chassidus teaches that every detail is all Hashem (even including a simple leaf turning the air). If these concepts interest you watch the video (~34 minutes).

Weekly Hashkafa Shiur #72 | The Blueprint of Creation – Part 1 AUDIO by Rabbi Mendel Kessin

Rabbi Kessin shares with us the buidling blocks of creation. For example, the seven attributes of creation “down here” so to speak and the real lack of knowledge we don’t have about the creation “up there” (fascinating discussion). Once we have the basics of creation down we can better understand what our role is and how we can do our responsibility to fulfill the purpose of creation.

Personal Thoughts – I like how the Rabbi doesn’t pontificate and claim to know about all the details of creation or what Hashem wants and quite humbly states there is a lot we just don’t know about the whats and whys of this very esoteric subject.

Throw Yourself on HaShem COMPLETELY

Rabbi David Yisrael Kalmus – How much should you thrown yourself on Hashem? Completely! This video explains step by step how to do that according to Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s teachings. Rabbi Kalmus also answers someone towards the end of video who asked why they are not getting what they are asking for. The answer is a bit blunt but the explanation was clear – because we don’t want it enough….yet. He further explains that we just recently read the weekly Torah portion where Sara Imenu finally has a child (after 90 years of praying). Why did it take so long? Because to have a child who becomes one of the most important persons every to walk the face of the Earth, who gives birth to the Jewish people, who Hashem uses as an example of why He constantly forgives the Jewish people for their transgressions it took an unprecedented amount of want.

Personal Thoughts – If you want to hear more about this important concept watch the video. It’s about 35 minutes at single speed and 17 minutes at double speed.

Experiencing Your Own Personal Resurrection

Rabbi David Yisrael Kalmus – Back from the Chagim (Jewish Holidays), Rabbi Kalmus explains the concept of humility and getting rid of self is the start of connection to G-d.

Personal Thoughts – I had trouble understanding a lot of these deep Kabbalah concepts so just focused on what I was able to understand like trying to tame my Yetzer Harah (evil inclination).

Monday Double Feature – Rabbi David Kalmus – and building fences on YouTube

These two videos – one last week via Zoom only and yesterday’s video via live class in Jerusalem. The first one talks about the importance of speaking out our prayers loudly to better help our prayers come into actual fruition. The second video focuses on the power of our ratzon (our will) – the more we want something the greater chance we have to manifest it in our lives. Hope you enjoy them!

One of the above videos discusses the need to build fences to protect us from outside influences. One of those is protecting our eyes from immodesty when watching YouTube videos. To circumvent this I did some research on Google and found the following methodologies to limit what I see when watching YouTube videos and avoid seeing immodest things without my consent. I’ve decided to post it here for those that are interested to help comply with what is referenced by Rabbi Kalmus above. Please note these are not my technical inventions but just stuff I researched on Google (and are public knowledge):

Here is how you can make YouTube a safer place. The key is the ability to go directly to the channels you subscribe to ONLY. Here is how to do it:

For Desktop – make a bookmark using this link:
https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions
120% screen zoom (which blocks out things you don’t want to see)

For Mobile – the app icon you should use:
Long press YouTube and then drag the subscriptions shortcut onto the home screen to make an icon! You can then edit the subscriptions icon to put the icon of the YouTube app.
